More Information about our Island PDF Print E-mail

We want nothing more than for your stay at Hairy Lemon to be as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.  To keep our little Island paradise running and to keep our visitors happy requires planning on our part since we do not have mains power and are only accessible by boat.   The Island is powered by solar and gas and most of our supplies are at least an hour away.  This is why reservations are essential. We hope that the information and FAQ sections below can help you better plan your visit to us.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

Food and Drinks

At present all meals at the Hairy Lemon are buffet style. A typical day’s menu includes, fresh fruit, eggs, toast and porridge at breakfast, followed by a variety of salads and savouries for lunch rounded off with a least two tasty choices of main dish served in the evening, along with a starter or dessert. Vegetarian food is catered for with every meal. We are working towards an a la carte service to better suit your needs. To help us cater to your requirements, please let us know when you book if you have any particular dietary needs (allergies etc). Our prices are inclusive of three meals during your stay, if you would like to stay for an extra meal it is an additional 5000ush.

We make an effort to ensure that our bar is stocked with a broad range of alcoholic and soft beverages.  You are welcome to bring your own alcohol to the Island, but please be aware there is corkage fee of 6,000ush.

Arrival and Departure:

The only access to the Island is by our wood boat ferry.  The last ferry crosses at 6:00pm, after this there is no access to the Island, this is due to it being unsafe to cross after dark. Please allow for this in your travel plans. In the event of a medical emergency, it is most certainly possible for you to leave the island.

Island activities:

The island provides a perfect environment for many activities. Why not indulge in some water volleyball, with a net just metres away from the bar. Fishing opportunities can be found all around the islands, and rod rental will very soon be available.

The world famous Nile Special wave can be found just a short paddle away. Kayakers bring your own equipment to revel in some serious air time.

For those of you less experienced in paddling, we can help you arrange kayaking lessons ahead of time, just let us know when you call/email to book.

Nature walks: On request, and subject to staff availability, you can go on a guided walk through the lattice of forested islands and shallow waterways, ending up at the natural Jacuzzi. Regular sightings of the resident otter family, red tailed monkeys, monitor lizards, bird life and a wonderful diversity of butterflies can be seen. A good pair of closed shoes, and swimming gear is advised.

Swimming in the various pools and inlets around the island is great way to cool off after a hard day’s relaxing. We just advise that you watch out for the currents and water levels as they do change throughout the day.

Power:

In our attempt to be ecologically friendly, the Hairy Lemon runs exclusively on solar power for all the lighting and music to our bar/restaurant area and lights in the bandas. We can also harness this energy to charge your music players and mobile phone for free – subject to sunshine!
