Hairy Lemon Island Uganda

Directions from Kampala :

It takes about 1.5 hours to get to Hairy Lemon from Kampala in your own vehicle but allow 2-2.5 hours if you are using public transportation.

As you go thru Mukono heading from Kampala to Jinja you will see a sign on the left saying KAYUNGA. Turn left here and just keep on this same road until you reach the edge of Kayunga town. You will see an old disused petrol station (it might look more like a building site by now...) on the right and a triangular intersection with a sign saying NGERU.

Veer right here and go a further 10km approx. You will now be passing thru a small town called NAZIGO and you will see on your left a twin-pump dirt floor CALTEX service station, no roof or anything. Just here there is a dirt road off to the left and our first sign.

Turn left onto the dirt road and after about 8km you will see another sign. 

Veer right here and within the next 1km you will pass over 2 dirt speed humps. Immediately after the second hump there is a small track off to the right and our last sign. Turn right here and you will reach our parking area after about 800 meters.

Just park up near the house with the flowers and bang on the tyre rim at the bottom of the hill. The boat will come over and get you.

Directions from Jinja :

It takes about 1 hour to get to Hairy Lemon from Jinja if you are using your own vehicle but allow 1.5-2 hours if you are using public transportation.

Cross the bridge out of Jinja and at the NILE BREWERIES Compound the road can either go straight ahead to Kampala or you can veer to the right. VEER RIGHT.

Now just stay on this road for about another 30 km.

You will go through 2 groups of speed bumps.  The second set is in a town called KANGALAMERA and you can usually see thousands of PINEAPPLES here piled up in huge bundles along the side of the road...And LOTS of MATATUS.

Approximately 7km after KANGALAMIRA you will come to a small town called NAZIGO. You will see on your RIGHT a small 2-pump CALTEX service station with a dirt floor and no roof. Just level with this you go over 1 more set of 3 speed bumps and then immediately on your RIGHT you will see our first sign. 

Turn RIGHT here onto the DIRT ROAD. Look for our second sign after about 8km.  VEER RIGHT at this sign.

During the next 1 km you will pass over 2 more DIRT speed bumps. Immediately after the second speed bump you will see a small track off to the right and our third and last sign.  Turn RIGHT again here and drive down to our security gate and boat crossing, just a few hundred meters. Park up at the house with all the flowers and bang on the tyre rim at the bottom of the hill.  The boat will come across and get you.

Remember: the last boat leaves the shore at 6:00 PM and there is no access to the Island after this time so make sure you arrive by then.  Keep in mind the travel time estimates in the directions above.
